Option 1: Research-oriented GiS Program

GiS Mentorship Porgram 2024: Important dates

Requirements & Eligibility: Mentees

  • Mathematics

  • Engineering

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • Computer Science

  • Any high school juniors (16 y.o.) to college juniors (21 y.o) with majors or intended majors in the following departments are eligible to participate in the Research Institute and Professional Development Program:

  • Environmental Science

  • Neuroscience & Behavior

  • Physics & Astronomy

  • Psychology

  • or any other STEM flied.

  • A preferred minimum GPA of at least 3.0 in both the previous semester and cumulatively.

  • Applicants who have submitted and then withdrawn an application during the current cycle are not eligible to reapply until the next application cycle.

  • No prior working experience in STEM-related fields is necessary for application.

  • Girls in STEM requires a commitment of 4 hours of independent work on your project and a minimum of one weekly meeting lasting 2 hours with your mentor. In total, a minimum time commitment of 6 hours is required for a mentee.

  • The signing of the Mentee Commitment Agreement is mandatory.

    • For applicants under 18 years old, both the student and parent/legal guardian must sign this agreement, solidifying a shared commitment to the program.

Requirements & Eligibility: Mentors

  • Project Oriented: Professionals in any STEM-related field, including those from Consulting & Insurance Companies, are eligible to apply as mentors.

  • Research Oriented: Graduate student / postdoc / professor with recent research experience in any STEM field. All fields are welcome, including disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, as long as they intersect with STEM.

  • A commitment to guiding and supporting mentees in their professional journeys is essential.

  • Girls in STEM requires a commitment of at least one weekly meeting lasting 2 hours from mentors.

  • All mentors must sign a Mentor Commitment Agreement, underscoring their dedication to the mentorship program.

  • Mentee selection is based on motivation, compatibility, and additional factors. Pre-selected candidates proceed to an interview stage conducted by the Girls in STEM team and volunteers.

  • To apply for GiS Mentorship Program, visit our official website, choose your preferred track in the Application Form, and follow the application process outlined in the application portal.

  • It's not just about research or projects—it's about fostering meaningful connections. Our mentors are dedicated to guiding and inspiring mentees throughout their GiS Mentorship experience.

  • Dive into the essence of each track. Project-Oriented Program focuses on hands-on projects addressing local challenges, while Research-Oriented Ewgis delves into collaborative research ventures with mentors.

  • Explore mentorship dynamics! In both tracks, mentors are chosen based on expertise, but Project Development mentors may include professionals from various industries, while Research Institute mentors are experts from academic backgrounds.

  • Mentees are required to commit at least 4 hours to independent project work and attend a weekly 2-hour meeting with their mentor, resulting in a total commitment of 6 hours per week.

  • Mentors are requested to commit at least 2 hours per week for a mentoring meeting with their mentee.
